RS1EM is an unusually small sized auxiliary reader designed solely for card reading, and 125 kHz EM cards at that. It communicates with the controller via Wiegand standard, with a default data transmission length of 26-bits, adjustable to 34-bits.
This reader is exceptionally small, resembling an unshielded push button. This compact size is advantageous for installation in tight spaces or for concealed setups, though it somewhat reduces the reading distance. With its IP68 rating, it is suitable for outdoor use, and its design allows for installation with a shield, similar to push buttons.
Auxiliary readers are devices capable of reading RFID cards and, depending on the type, other forms of identification such as PIN codes or fingerprints as well, but are unable to independently control locks. They transmit the received identification data to a lock-controlling device (door control panel, standalone reader), which determines whether the person attempting to enter is authorized and subsequently either unlocks the door or denies entry.
Data transmission can occur through various communication formats, one of which is Wiegand. Wiegand is a long-standing standard that remains one of the most widespread interfaces, despite the existence of more modern, higher-security communication methods. The Wiegand method transmits data analogously over two wires, alternatingly shorting one or the other to ground, with the data being "Morse-coded" in binary form.
The advantage of Wiegand is its low resource requirement and simplicity in both design and use. Its disadvantages include being unsuitable for transmitting larger or more complex data (such as biometric fingerprints) and lacking encryption, making it relatively easy to intercept with modern equipment, thus posing a security risk.
Despite its shortcomings, Wiegand still provides an adequate security level for most locations today. Its maximum effective range is approximately 50 meters, achievable only with high-quality and appropriately thick wiring.
